New ABC Clarion Article Policy

Hello everyone,

For new members and anyone who has forgotten, I am Jessica Li, the ABC Clarion managing editor. I am writing to you all today about an important new ABC Clarion article policy. 

The ABC Clarion editing team and the GCTimes have recently decided upon a new article policy. Previously, we required written submissions to be around 500 words. However, now, we have broadened the range. Article word counts can now range from 400-800 words. Written submissions can be newspaper-style articles, essays, or poems. 

The illustration policy still remains the same.

Please continue to submit to ABC Clarion. I understand you are all busy during the summer, but it is important to remember your duties as an ABC Clarion member too. Send any illustrations, photographs, and/or written submissions to the group email, clarionabc@gmail.com anytime.

Blog Writers

If anyone is interested in submitting a post for the ABC Clarion blog, please email me (Jessica Li, ABC Clarion Managing Editor), jessicali1997@gmail.com. In your email, please include an outline or description of what you envision your post to be. If available, you can also send me the actual post I (preferably only if is short and simple). Photographs, images, videos, simulations, links to websites, drawings, etc. are also all welcome. The blog is able to publish some things that the newspaper cannot, such as videos or simulations, which is just another great reason to have this blog and contribute to it.

If your post is approved for publishing on the blog, you will either be added as a blog contributor or I will publish your post and give you due credit.

As always, continue to submit drawings, photographs, and articles to ABC Clarion- for the rest of this summer, that also includes the class of 2013.

Explanation of the ABC Clarion Blog

I realized that I neglected to explain the ABC Clarion Blog in my first post, so here it is.

Henggao, an ABC Clarion member, came up with the idea of an ABC Clarion blog/website where reminders and announcements could be posted, discussions could happen, and soft copies of the newspaper. On this blog, will also work to include Writer/Illustrator of the Month and Writer/Illustrator of Year awards for outstanding contributors as the blog developments.

Summer Submission Ideas

Here are some submission ideas. You can write an article, take a photograph, or draw an illustration- whatever floats your boat.

Summer program you are attending/have attended

Summer internship you have completed/ are completing 

Volunteer stories or opportunities 

Where to look for a job- even if you have not found one, you can talk about the process of looking for one or maybe you know a friend who has successfully found one  

Summer sales- in anything books, clothes, shoes, electronics, etc. 

Summer after senior year- arguably the best summer of your life! (no need to pad that college resume anymore)

College application struggles- you don't even have to be a part of the class of 2014, we all have to do some college application padding...

Movies reviews- The Internship (who doesn't love Owen Wilson?), The Purge (was it really that scary?), Great Gatsby (I heard this movie got some bad reviews..what did you think?), Now You See Me, etc. It doesn't have to be a new movie either. 

TV show reviews- is your favorite show going down hill? Are any shows getting better? Are excited for the season premiere of any particular show(s)? Are there any interesting new shows?

Any new songs? 

Book reviews- The Fault in Our Stars is especially popular right now... 

Food recipes- ice cream flavors, smoothie recipes, health salads, etc. 

The Supreme Court Decisions- I think they are making 3-4 in June...one of them is about affirmative action (that really affects us Asians)...?

The reopening of the Jersey Shore- it is a bit late, but would still make a solid article- Obama was there! 

Weird weather patterns 

And anything else you want to write about!

Thank you all for a great 2012-2013 year with ABC Clarion. We look forward to an even greater 2013-2014 year. Remember- submit, submit, submit. :)

Summer REMINDER

Just a reminder that ABC Clarion still requires the participation of all members throughout the entire summer. Write a couple articles each month (or more). Take some stunning photographs. Draw something. Email us for article ideas or illustration ideas if you are really stuck. Email us your suggestions for improving ABC Clarion. Encourage friends to apply to join ABC Clarion. Read ABC Clarion- in print or online. Remember, associate editors are now chosen based on the quantity and quality of articles written in a 3-month period. To be an official ABC Clarion writers, you must submit at least 2 articles every 3 months. Now is your chance to earn leadership positions and titles which will be a stepping stone to higher ones!

There is not set date when articles are due. Just send anything you have in as soon as possible.

Announcement for ABC Clarion Current Seniors (Class of 2013)

I have already sent the message below in an email, but sometimes sections of emails can get lost with the rest of the email. Please read the rest of this post- it is extremely short and will make your lives and my life much easier. If you did not receive any email containing the following message, please let me know immediately (email me jessicali1997@gmail.com). 

To all seniors- please let me know if you wish to be removed from the ABC Clarion email list. If you do not email me, I will continue to send you emails that you may not need or like to read (even when you are in college). However, we would like you all to still remain contributors over the summer.

IMPORTANT: New Qualification Process for Editors and Titles

Below is the email sent to ABC Clarion members. If you are an ABC Clarion member and did not receive the email, please let me know immediately and read the rest of this post. If you did not read the email, read the rest of this post. If you have forgotten the content of the email, read this post. 

In April, I sent an email to all the ABC Clarion group members about the selection process for leadership positions and titles. Please note: THAT SELECTION PROCESS NO LONGER APPLIES. We have developed a new selection process that will likely be more effective and fair.

 

The new selection process is detailed below.

The two ABC Clarion members who have the most PUBLISHED (not just submitted) essays in a three-month period will be the associate editors. If the member with the third most published essays has been published 6 or more times in the three month period, then he/she will also be an associate editor. Thus, associate editors will rotate every three months. We have noticed that in the past, after associate editors received there title, they have not contributed significantly and/or consistently in the editing, writing, and/or illustrating. So, now, the associate editors will be individuals who are consistently motivated contributors.

 

Because we are only counting published essays, quality and quantity both matter. Sometimes we have many submissions and cannot publish submissions immediately. So, to make it fair, we have selected the three month rotation period, enough time for all approved essays to be published (we will make sure of that).

 

In order to be an official writer of ABC clarion, a member must submit more than two quality (approved) essays every three month. If you have not submitted more than two essays each month, you are not an ABC Clarion writer. You are only a member.

 

All the above processes apply for illustrators as well. Illustrators- contact me or Rita Fang for illustration ideas related to a specific ABC Clarion article, or you can illustrate something on your own that does not relate to an article. The only difference between the illustrator and writer selection processes is that illustrators will not become essay editors- they will become illustration editors, and instead of becoming an official writer, they will become an official illustrator.

Calling all high school students! If you are at all interested in writing, photography, or illustrating, join ABC Clarion! Just send a sample of your writing and/or artwork to clarionabc@gmail.com. We will review the writing sample, decide whether the writing suits ABC Clarion, and communicate with you accordingly.

Encourage your high school-aged siblings, friends, and classmates to join too!
